Origin of Mother's Day
In 1876, the United States was still mourning the dead of the Civil War. Anna Marie Jarvis gave a lecture on the National Day of the United States in the chapel. After talking about the heroic story of the death in the battle, she said in prayer: "I hope that somewhere, sometime, there will be people. Create a Mother s Day to commemorate and praise the mothers of the United States and the world."
Mrs. Jarvis has served her chapel for more than 25 years. When she died at the age of 72, the 41-year-old daughter, Anna, decided to create a Mother s Day to fulfill her mother s wish for praying many years ago. Anna has written to many prestigious figures and asked them to support the establishment of Mother s Day in order to promote filial piety. The initial reaction was cold, but she was not discouraged and continued to appeal to all walks of life. On May 12, 1907, Andrei s Methodist Church should be Anna’s invitation to hold a service for the mothers.
The following year, the ceremony was held in Philadelphia, and the response was enthusiastic. Finally, it was supported by the Governor of Victoria and announced the establishment of Mother s Day in the state in 1910. In 1911, the celebration of Mother s Day has been carried out extensively, not only in every state of the United States of America, but also in some countries in Canada, Mexico and South America. The United States of America also distributed leaflets for the promotion of Mother s Day to countries in ten different languages in order to expand the influence. In the years that followed, the celebration of the Mother s Day campaign continued unabated. In 1912, the United States of America established the Mother s Day International Association.
In May 1913, the House of Representatives of the United States of America unanimously passed a resolution calling on the President and all officials of the Cabinet, the House of Representatives and the Federal Government to wear white carnation flowers on Mother s Day. In 1914, the United States Congress officially named the second Sunday of May as Mother s Day and asked the President to issue a declaration calling on government officials to hoist the national flag on all public buildings. Then, President Wilson announced that national citizens also hanged the national flag on their homes to express their love and respect for the mothers of the United States of America. Since then, the President of the United States of America has published a declaration of the same content every year. Since then, Mother s Day has been carried out in various countries.
In the middle of the 17th century, Mother s Day spread to the United Kingdom, and the British used the fourth Sunday of the fasting period as Mother s Day. On this day, young people who are away from home will return home and bring some small gifts to their mothers.
